One minute I was looking at my parents and their friends, and wondering what it would be like to be as old as them; the next thing I knew, I was. Yet here we are, even more baffled by life than when we were small children, with our new found status; confined to barracks as soldiers in war time, and what’s worse, expecting to be on the front line! We find ourselves in this new found existence suddenly imposed on us for our good and that of our small nation; without the help of a vade mecum to guide us through our unchartered times. Read more

I have previously written about how in the America’s, the arrival of Spanish conquistadores brought disease to many indigenous people who had no immunity to new infectious; and by exposing them to these they died in their thousands. Curiously, in my browsing recently through history, I came across a very similar scenario; except this time the happening was attributed to the English. Read more

CARMEN GOMEZ DIARY
Amongst the many cards and cuttings I keep; a habit I inherited from my Father who was forever being told off by mother when she was trying to dust around them; I came across a newspaper cutting of the photo of an eight year old boy; Martin Richard from Boston; who back in April 15th 2013, was killed by a bomb, as he waited for his father at a marathon finish line. For some reason I kept the cutting of his little face with his toothless smile; unawares that a year before, he had also held up a poster he’d made in school with the words “No more hurting people,” and below it, the word “Peace.” Ironical isn’t it and so tragic. A seasoned presenter on Spanish TV who has interviewed our Chief Minister before, reacted with incredulity and stupefaction at the news that their much revered Placido Domingo, had issued a press release to express his repentance over the accusations made against him; whilst only two months ago he was vociferously reiterating his innocence, in an interview in El Pais. His arrogance led him to say things like, how dare they say that about him! It was all fabrication, “un disparate.” Read more

Danger on the pavements
It is commendable that the minister for traffic wants to give the bicycle riders more lanes to travel along. The trouble is that many people have forgotten about the markings on the ground and find themselves at risk of the riders; or you find riders showing their frustration because they are not being allowed to cycle without impediment. Sometimes, people’s inflated egos make them forget the ever present “hemeroteca” which is there to remind everyone of what they would rather forget. We too have our own newspaper library and archives. So when the La Linea Mayor writes to complain about our land reclamation which according to him has caused chaos in their coasts; seemingly unawares that climate change is the one wreaking havoc in Spain through their greed of building on the shore lines; I thought it would be a good idea to remind him of the Algeciras reclamation some years back. How bleak a sight to see people queuing outside the new health centre in bitterly cold weather at 7.30am, as I approached the hospital last Friday morning. No doubt, seeing the length of the queue, they must have started gathering outside the open entrance since 7am, or even earlier, to try and get to see a doctor that day.
