The last vestige of my childhood years in Gibraltar and for many others too, is soon to disappear from where it has stood since 1922. The Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Sir Reginald Bloomfield in 1917 to emphasize the military character of the cemetery, was originally located within North Front Cemetery. It was rebuilt and relocated after World War 11 in an area west of the North Front Cemetery. Read more

Opinion by MARLENE HASSAN NAHON, leader 'Together Gibraltar'
The Chief Minister is in no position to say that Together Gibraltar is trying to start a dangerous drugs experiment on the Rock. Maintaining the status quo and conveniently brushing serious issues like these under the carpet by twisting what has been said is what is dangerous and irresponsible. It is through constant close contact with recovering addicts that we have first-hand evidence of this portfolio not being given the importance it deserves, and that as a result, many people in our community are suffering daily. Opinion by the GGCA
Every year, following the announcement of the Budget, civil and public servants are usually granted a ‘cost of living’ rise in salary. The idea behind this is that income should rise in accordance with inflation – when the RPI increases and salaries stay stagnant, over time, employees’ salaries begin to depreciate. The cost of living raise guarantees that civil and public servants’ income is protected against inflation and it means that salaries, following the raise, in effect retain the same purchasing power. It is common to come across sites on the Internet where reports have been put together by Spanish intellectuals on the subject of Gibraltar. Reports which speak of the toxic influences of the Rock on Spain and describing us as upstarts who need to be put in our place; whilst at the same time urging the Government of the day to take the dispute to International forums and tribunals, with a strategic option to be followed over the coming years. For if nothing concrete is done in the meantime, it is feared they run the risk of an event such as the UK`s exit from the EU, or a change of tack in the UN`s position on territories pending decolonisation, as taking over the initiation dictating of Spain’s policy. In Yiddish, there is a saying ‘a shprakh is a dialect mit en army un flot’, or ‘a language is a dialect with an army and a navy’. That means that it has acquired a degree of power and influence as well as status and prestige, having a standardised grammar as well as orthography or writing system. Conversely, a dialect is a language with few or any of those things at all. Read more

You are not new to trade unionism, but of late you seem to have propelled yourself to a higher plane. What exactly is your background?
I have a legal background, as I was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2001. I started my career in private practice, but joined the civil service at the Crown Council grade in 2005. I became President of the GGCA in 2012 and continue in this role to date. Read more

I have said on more than one occasion, how fortunate we are in Gibraltar to have amongst us, those who through their expertise in law have been able to fight our corner successfully in the past, as happened on a couple of occasions. The truth is that recently I read someone had rightly made a complaint on social media, re matters to do with Spain and the committee of 24, adding that “Gibraltar has never won a case against Spain. I would like to say that he has room for optimism, because as it happens we did, back in 2016. Read more

In the same way that my parents tried to assimilate and accept the fast evolvement of the world around them which was so different from theirs; I now find myself, not doing the same thing, but certainly being sorely tested by habits and attitudes which are so far removed from those I knew and grew up with; and I am sure I am not alone in this. What will Brexit mean for Britain’s fourteen overseas territories; the home of 250,000 Britons? They are seen as remnants of the British Empire that have not been granted independence or have voted to remain British. One thing that comes across very clearly, which takes first place before any other necessity, is the issue of EU funding and the dependence of most of the Overseas Territories on it. Read more
