Winners of our Baby of the Year contest receive their prizes from Miss Gibraltar
Second and third place went to Dylan Macias and Gianna Segui respectively who could have quite easily taken the title in what was a close three-horse race.
The competition winners and their family members were invited to the award ceremony at the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre last Friday where tea, cakes and coffee were laid out for them.
“I am extremely happy and was elated with such a great surprise,” said mother to seven-month-old Kate, Janice Zammitt. “My mother-in-law picked up a copy of Panorama and woke us up first thing in the morning. All babies are beautiful, but she is most beautiful to me.”
Proud grandfather Charles Buttigieg was unaware that Kate had even been entered into the competition but said he was not taken aback by the fact that she took top prize.
“She has great DNA, so I’m not surprised that she won,” he joked.
Miss Gibraltar 2017 Jodie Garcia, who judged the competition, ran out of superlatives to describe the high standard of the entries and revealed that the competition brought out her motherly instincts.
“Kate had beautiful deep blue eyes that were filled with wonder and that’s what stood out to me,” she said. “My motherly instincts took hold of me and I was brooding at the thought of having children.”
Ms Garcia said she will definitely have kids but will wait until her reign as Miss Gibraltar is over before taking the path of motherhood.
“Of course I will enter my kids into the competition, what would you expect?” she joked.
The sponsors for the event were as follows: Panorama (provided engraved glass trophies); The Flower Shop (bouquets of flowers); Mill Pharmacy (baby products beautifully decorated by Karisse Mcwilliam); Travel Counsellors, formally known as Sterling Travel (£100 travel voucher); Abrines Distributors, Saccone and Speed (baby products and £100 cheque); Mother and Baby (£100 voucher).
