St Bernard’s First School ‘Moroccan Day’

St Bernard’s First School ‘Moroccan Day’

Year Two at St Bernard's First School participated in a fully interactive, fun-filled 'Moroccan Day' this week. Children came to school dressed in traditional costume to celebrate this wonderful culture that plays an important role in Gibraltar's heritage.

Mrs Kaula El Mokalhi, our culture expert, met with the Year Two teachers in order to plan the event and ensure that the children were able to experience some authentic traditions first hand.

The children made and drank mint tea, and enjoyed traditional cakes. They watched a traditional wedding and got to sit on a wedding throne. The teachers and some children even had henna patterns drawn on their hand whilst everyone was able to design their own intricate patterns on paper.

There was fun, laughter, respect and celebration in sharing traditions with their friends.

Headteacher Mrs Sonia Lopez commented that: "The day was an outstanding success. The children of Moroccan descent were extremely proud to be able to showcase some of their culture and traditions, and their peers were very keen to learn and get involved in interactive experiences. All the children were highly engaged and enthusiastic. We are delighted to encourage these community-linked experiences with our children and we are very grateful to Mrs El Mokalhi, who is in fact a former pupil of our school!"
