Change of name of teachers' union

Gibraltar NASUWT held its Annual General Meeting on 15th March. This year's AGM was extremely well attended, with a 100% increase in attendance from 2017. The AGM included the annual President’s Report on all Union business conducted by the Executive as well as a general overview of all matters of interest, including outstanding claims with the Official Side.

In addition to our change of name and adoption of an updated set of rules, Gibraltar NASUWT will be holding elections to the Executive Committee on an annual basis, instead of biannually, in order to increase our accountability to members. This year all candidates to the Executive Committee stood uncontested.

These were the results of the 2018 election:

PRESIDENT - Victor Gonzalez

VICE PRESIDENT – Adrian Hewitt

TREASURER – Rodney Pereira

SECRETARY – Pablo Hernandez

VICE SECRETARY – Charlie Bishop

They add: Teachers, LSAs and Senior Management also voted on a number of motions. We had a total of 351 ballots cast from members in First, Middle & secondary schools, St. Martin’s, Gibraltar College, Loreto, Prior Park and the Department of Education. An excellent exercise of democracy. The results were as follows:

MOTION 1

Our Association is currently licensed at GTA/NASUWT. This is not in line with NASUWT branches in other countries, all of which are named after the country followed by NASUWT. In order to put ourselves in line with NASUWT policy and practice this Association agrees to change its official name to Gibraltar NASUWT.

FOR: 334, AGAINST: 4, ABSTAIN: 12, BLANKS: 1

MOTION 2

Our Association has been using generic NASUWT rules. In full consultation with the National Officers we have agreed on a set of rules specifically designed for our branch. This Association ratifies these new rules.

FOR: 317, AGAINST: 10, ABSTAIN: 23, BLANKS: 1

MOTION 3

This Association is concerned with the generally inadequate temperature control in schools. This includes both unacceptably high and low temperatures. It instructs the Executive to pursue this issue with the Official Side to seek a permanent solution to this problem.

FOR: 326, AGAINST: 2, ABSTAIN: 22, BLANKS: 1

MOTION 4

This Association welcomes this Government’s commitment to refurbish those schools that will not be getting a new build. It instructs its Executive to engage with the Official Side to ensure a constructive consultation process with all concerned

FOR: 323, AGAINST: 13, ABSTAIN: 8, BLANKS: 7

MOTION 5

‘A Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers’ was publicly presented as a fait accompli. It was always this Association’s intention to have it ratified by its members. This Association instructs its Executive to inform the Official Side that this document needs to be reviewed and eventually ratified by this Association before final implementation.

FOR: 315, AGAINST: 8, ABSTAIN: 22, BLANKS: 6
