Israel ‘stays out’ of Gibraltar/Spain sovereignty dispute

The Panorama interview

Israel’s stance on Gibraltar and Spain’s sovereignty dispute is non committal following comments made by Israel Ambassador to the UK Mark Regev in a brief visit to Gibraltar.

In response to PANORAMA questions yesterday at the Gibraltar Airport Wessex Lounge, he said that he thought he ‘should stay out those issues’ and then apologised for that.

Mr Regev made his first visit to Gibraltar at the invitation of the local Jewish community to celebrate Israel’s 70th year of independence in what was ‘a massive birthday party’ for the country.

During his visit, Israel’s main voice in the English speaking world said he was trying to discover the details of the Israeli/Gibraltar economic relationship.

He said he would also seek to find ways in which he could work in government to try and make those relationships even stronger.
