Garcia takes on UN, and Picardo attends make-or-break Brexit talks

Major political and diplomatic developments have made the government reshuffle ministers to face commitments abroad. Both the chief minister Fabians Picardo and Deputy Dr Joseph Garcia were scheduled to leave for New York yesterday for the Gibraltar session at the fourth committee of the united nations,

but in the end only Dr Garcia went on to New York, with Picardo remaining in London to attend all-important Brexit talks. The unscheduled Brexit meeting arose towards the end of last week, so decisions had to be taken at the last minute.

Dr Garcia will address the UN this evening. Gibraltar’s representation is "In safe, able and extremely competent hands in the deputy chief minister," said Picardo. The nature of the Brexit development forced Picardo to attend such talks. "It’s important I continued the work we are doing in the context of the Brexit negotiations," he said. Indications in recent days have pointed to talks that include Spanish representatives, so it is anticipated that there will be a Spanish dimension in the meetings ahead, as negotiations draw to a close.
