‘The next phase of Gibraltar’s development’: Hassan Centenary Terraces discussed at DPC

By Belinda Cano

The Development Planning Commission (DPC) meeting for the proposed construction of Hassan Centenary Terraces was held yesterday at the Charles Hunt Room in the John Mackintosh Hall.

Robert Matto of WSRM Architects welcomed the DPC and went on to cover the ‘salient points’ of the proposed construction and what it would provide Gibraltar, including six apartment blocks of varying height with 665 ‘high-quality’ affordable apartments, 700 car parking spaces, 250 motorcycle parking spaces, a seaside promenade allowing two-way traffic, cycle lanes, wide pavement and road. In terms of scale of buildings, he added that ‘the site’s close proximity to the northern face of the Rock...actually allows for 90 metres in terms of development.’

However as the new Town Planning Act is still not in effect and as Government projects do not require the Commission’s approval, the project stood before the DPC for guidance and advice only.
