Carmen Gomez
BEHIND THE SCENES IN MISS WORLD CONTEST

by CARMEN GOMEZ - a former Miss Gibraltar

I find myself writing about a film which has been brought to my attention; a film to be released in 2020, under the title “Misbehaviour.” My particular interest here is that it has been written about the Miss World contest of 1970, which I took part in. Keira Knightley stars. In fact from what I have gathered, a few of the contestant’s roles have already been cast, with my part being played by an Italian actress, by the name of Elena Marotta. I heard that her name had been mentioned recently as being a possibility to play the young Ava Gardner, in a film of her life.

One of the two script writers on the film is Gaby Chiappe, who hails from our shores, and who was awarded the British Independent Film Award for Debut Screenwriter in 2017.

It should make interesting viewing, since it was a year for the Miss World contest, which stood out from all the rest in many respects. In many ways it did for me, and it is no surprise that it has become the theme for a film under the name; “Misbehaviour.”

All was not what it appeared to be

The Miss World contest had its moments for me, as I wrote in my memoirs. Not only did I find myself going up against the formidable Mrs Morley, wife of the organiser, but it soon became clear to me that all was not what it appeared to be; that there were many factors involved which were politically motivated and involving business interests; all of which had little to do with the Miss World as I had originally perceived it. I should imagine that such matters will appear throughout the filming.
