PSOE Victory Nothing to Celebrate About...

Leo Olivero

We all analyse things, news and life differently. In fact, ‘public citizens’ perception to news can shape their political and often economic behaviour, making the origins of those perceptions an important question on how they actually formed such an opinion.

One such opinion, or call it a current trend of thought, is how positive the result of the Spanish (PSOE) election win on Sunday has been welcomed by quite a number of people in Gibraltar!

This point was and still is obvious, as seen on some local social media groups after the election results was made known and in comments and conversations held with other elated people. A situation that has led me to question ‘ONCE AGAIN’ where do these locals live, OR how do some people in Gibraltar really evaluate important news items of this nature of a Gibraltar/Spanish dimension, its just incredible!

I refer to one social media group who had a thread going on the Spanish election result. People literally appeared elated, others told me in person how relieved they were that the ‘PSOE had defeated the rest’ (or) practically running away with Sunday’s election. Although in my book, not running fast enough to secure a majority and now once again, the PSOE must depend on other political factions to help them govern effectively, which is normally the case with a hung parliament situation!

Respecting Everyone’s Opinion But?

I respect everyone’s opinion, but my thoughts are that some of our part-time and quite naive local political thought provokers genuinely believe the PSOE victory on Sunday was important enough for Gibraltar to Celebrate!

It’s beyond me, how can anyone remotely contemplate the PSOE victory is anything good for Gibraltar? Considering the reality of the current political situation, with the same winning PSOE party, and especially how the Spanish socialist party have been nothing more then malicious political band of ‘gilipollas’ or for our English readers, a spiteful Spanish group of ‘Asxxholes’ towards Gibraltar and its people!

As far as Sunday’s election result is concerned, my opinion is clear; nothing at all has changed from a Gibraltar perspective. The election results only raises the spectre of another period of instability for Spain, with Sanchez depending on alliances with hostile rivals in an environment that has politically soured, since the results on Sunday. So what exactly should we be celebrating in Gibraltar?

When in fact, the Spanish elections has seen, particularly in the Campo and especially in La Linea a significant development with the rise of the ultra-nationalist Vox party, which nationally got over 10% of the vote in a country like Spain that has had no far-right party to speak of since the death of Franco in 1975.

Although in reality, the election result over the border and now the right wing encroachment into daily lives, should not shock many people in Gibraltar, especially people like me. Who over many years have regularly reported in this newspaper how Spain and Spanish politics have always flirted with their far right fascists political lovers, to the point, that 48 hours before the election PP leader Pablo Casado proposed to Vox to jump into bed with him, offering the extreme right wing leaders an alliance and seats in his party line up if he was successful, the PP wasn’t. But I doubt we have seen the last of the Vox threat in Spanish politics...on the contrary!
