A team from Special Olympics Gibraltar will be heading off to the Netherlands this Friday for the Special Olympics European Football Tournament which is being held in the city of Tilburg from May 24th to the 27th. The event is an 8-a-side competition which is being held as a part of the Special Olympics European Women’s Football Week. It is being organised by the club SVG Tilburg at the invitation of UEFA, and after being nominated by Special Olympics Netherlands. 

There are both female and male competitions and whilst SO Gibraltar will only be entering a team in the male competition, female Gibraltar footballer Daniella Vinent will be guesting for the Netherlands team.

The athletes will be flying to Amsterdam on Friday from Malaga for the opening ceremony on Friday night, with the competition starting in earnest on Saturday. The finals are expected to be between 1 pm and 4 pm on Sunday followed by the presentation of awards. The team will be accompanied by Head of Delegation Annie Risso, Head Coach Mario Prescott and Assistant Coaches James Danino and Jeremy Baldachino.

In the Men's team representing Special Olympics Gibraltar will be Gianni Ochello, Giovanni Yeo, Nicholas Danino, Lee Guerreiro, Sam Hook, Francis Avellano, Daniel Macias, Nolan Baglietto, Tyrone Davis and Glen Wimbleton.

The Gibraltar Football Association have once again shown their support for Special Olympics Gibraltar football by funding the trip.

During the weekend the athletes will be staying at the safari resort of Beekse Bergen which promises to be an experience all of its own.
