New housing welcomed

Action for Housing says it welcomes the announcement by Government that it will be constructing a further 228 homes, 44 of which will be for rental and purpose-built for the elderly. The remaining 184 flats will be provided under the so-called affordable Housing scheme.

As has happened in the past, the pensioners who live in Government rented accommodation will vacate their flats which will revert back to Government and which will be allocated to those on the waiting lists. At this stage iy is not known how many flats the Government will recover given that some of these pensioners live in the private sector.

Again, as has happened in the past, many of these flats are purchased by young people who in many instances do not release Government accommodation because they live with their parents.

According to the Government website here are 1,103 applicants on the housing waiting lists, without taking into account those on the medical and social lists.

Henry Pinna added: "We can assume that these well over one thousand applicants are the ones who cannot purchase in any of the three so-called affordable housing accommodation which, will be constructed over the next three or four years.

"At this stage we do not know how many flats overall the Government will recover, but we are certain that not enough to house the over one thousand applicants on the waiting lists. Hence our insistence that there is a need to construct more housing for rental over and above those which will be built for the pensioners, otherwise many of those on the waiting list will have to wait for many years before being able to live in a decent home or will die waiting."
