The GSD condemns the actions of a Spanish Guardia Civil Launch that intentionally cut the fishing lines of a local recreational angler who had hooked a tuna and was clearly well within British Gibraltar Territorial waters.

The GSD considers this behaviour to be totally unacceptable and calls on the Government to ensure that local anglers are given greater protection.

Trevor Hammond, GSD Environment spokesman, said “it is appalling that local anglers are being harassed at sea by the Guardia Civil in Gibraltar waters whilst local enforcement agencies fail to ensure their safety”.

The GSD would like to remind the Government that many of these anglers have families waiting for them at home and that swift action is necessary. The GSD expects these actions to be robust in nature as the usual diplomatic protests have proved to be fruitless in the past.
