Spain concerned about Brexit effects

Joe Garcia

Concern is being expressed in Spain about the possible negative effects from Brexit, given the country's reliance on the UK in economic terms.

Spain is one of he most affected EU countries by the UK exit from the EU, a report saying that this is because of the depth of commercial relations and also because of Gibraltar - and Spanish workers is one of the issues cited.

In fact, a demonstration is planned in La Linea to ensure that the workers and other sources of income are protected following Brexit.

BRITISH ECONOMIC LINKS

There are about 300,000 UK expats living in Spain, the largest contingent in the EU by member state, while the number of Spaniards resident in the UK is between 150,000 and 175,000.

More British tourists, than of any other nationality, visit Spain, which is regarded as generating important wealth for Spain.

At the recent G7 meeting, where Spanish prime minister Sanchez was invited to dinner, there was an interchange of views with British prime minister Boris Johnson. Both are said to have been in agreement not to interfere with their respective residents in each country, with reciprocity being the keyword in the post-Brexit situation.

It is to be assumed that in general terms reciprocal and other arrangements will extent to Gibraltar, as the Rock is in the EU as a European territory for whose external relations the UK is responsible.

JOHNSON IS GIBRALTAR SUPPORTER

What is well known is that Mr Johnson has always been fully committed to Gibraltar and its people, going back over the years, even defending the Rock in the days of joint sovereignty proposals when support for Gibraltar was rather bleak. But Mr Johnson was already there waving the Gibraltar flag.
