“I know the mountain I have to climb,” says Vasquez

Robert Vasquez has been a lawyer for 43 years and will be running as an Independent Candidate. He recently resigned as an executive member of the GSD, and had contributed towards their manifesto.

PANORAMA asked how Robert felt, to which he responded by saying, “I’m feeling happy that I am progressing my desire to add to the democratic credentials that Gibraltar has by standing as an Independent. I fully appreciate and understand the difficulties that has because of the habit of block voting, but look, I think it’s time that people were given another chance to vote for somebody else. I know the mountain I have to climb over the next 3 weeks to convince people, but I am giving them an opportunity to choose an independent social democrat by reason of what they have read over the years and what has been published in the chronicle and other newspapers and generally from my experience.

“I feel that Gibraltar needs an electoral change, parliamentary change, and I think we need a body that independently investigates corruption apart from lots of other things that are needed, I think there are lots of social issues that need to be looked at carefully in Gibraltar.

“I think that is the main area of politics that I am known for which is electoral and parliamentary reform, issues of corruption, but that doesn’t mean I would limit my campaign to that but I will certainly lead on those issues.”
