GSLP/Liberals Go Green

The GSLP Liberals held their public meeting Tuesday evening at the John Macintosh Theatre where they announced their plans for the future if they are to again get elected into Government as a result of this upcoming general election.

The meeting gave the caretaker Ministers the opportunity to speak their views, talk about what they have done in the last 8 years and also express their appreciation for former Liberal Minister of Health, Care & Justice, Neil Costa, to be replaced by Vijay Daryanani.

First to speak was Minister for Economic Development, former leader of the GSLP and former Chief Minister, Sir Joe Bossano, who was in a tight schedule having to go to GBC’s Live Debate on Money straight after speaking.

Samantha Sacramento, Caretaker Minister of Housing and Equality, was next, highlighting the benefits that the Ministry of Housing has done over the last 8 years, and the accomplishments that the Ministry of Equality achieved.

She said, “It really is exciting times for us, a general election is always important, but these elections are even more important. These kinds of elections we’re facing now in the context of everything that’s surrounds us has the importance of a once in a life time election. We are presenting you an extremely ambitious manifesto, we always do, our manifestos are always called ambitious and we are always told that they cannot be done but we always deliver. And we know we have an extremely strong track record.”

Steven Licudi, The Caretaker Minister of Culture, Media, Youth and Sport followed, saying:

“As the Minister of Culture, the Media, Youth and Sport after the 2015 election, I was instrumentally forming the cultural development unit, brought the Island Games to Gibraltar and together with you, the people of Gibraltar, and all our other ministers, we made it to be the best games ever.”

Vijay Daryanani was next, saying,

“First of all I’d like to thank my friend Neil Costa. He has been a great Minister and it’s a privilege to replace him. I’m delighted to be chosen as a GSLP Liberal Candidate for these elections. When I stood for elections 20 years ago, I was made to feel very welcome. Today I feel the same. You have shown me the same warmth and I am extremely grateful for that.”

Paul Balban, Minister of Infrastructure and Planning, said:

“Today we live in times of great uncertainty. Brexit, the Spanish Elections, UK Elections, our Environment, who knows what will happen. The only thing that we can have a bearing on as individuals is our environment. We all want a better, healthier Gibraltar for ourselves and for our children, we all want to be fitter and we all want to live longer. Let our environment not stand in our way.”

Next was Gilbert Licudi, Minister for Tourism, Employment, Commercial Aviation and the Port who said,

“The reality over the last 8 years is that we have seen changes across all sectors that have been truly transformational. That is why our theme for these elections is ‘Generations’ and our slogan, ‘All our Generations in our hearts’ because our policies and our projects have benefited all generations.”

Caretaker Minister for the Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Education, Dr John Cortes said “the environment was no where near at the forefront of Politics as it is now. We must remember it was this government that changed the profile of the environment in Gibraltar, this government that has passed over 180 environmental laws to tackle smoking in public places, plastic, dog fouling, marine protection, nature conservation; created Commonwealth Park and protected Alameda Gardens.”

Caretaker Minister of Commerce, Albert Isola said, “The work that Joseph and Fabian and all the other ministers have done the past 3 years is absolutely remarkable. In 2011, there were 2,000 jobs in Gaming in Gibraltar. Today, 2019, Brexit, disaster for the gaming companies. Today we don’t have 2,000 jobs in Gaming, we have over 3,500 jobs in Gaming.”

“We have kept Gibraltar safe,” said Caretaker Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia. “We are the only ones who have the knowledge, the experience and the personal connections to take Gibraltar forward. We have a plan for the future because we stand at a vital moment on our history and now is not the time to change. Only a GSLP Liberal government can provide security, stability and prosperity.”

And finally, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said, “This year, we will present our people with a manifesto for Government that will deliver a Green Gibraltar, that will deliver a child friendly Gibraltar and will deliver a safe and secure passage through Brexit.”

Seven new parks, more housing estates, Victoria Keys, more schools, more development on Nuffield Pool, Improvements to Rosia Bay and more museums were some of the key areas on the upcoming GSLP Liberal manifesto which were announced toward the end of the Public Meeting.
