No Urgency to Change Drugs Laws: But There is a Swifter Need to Improve-Expand Drug Services!

Leo Olivero

The debate regarding the regulation of cannabis has intensified in recent years. For now we’ve seen Gibraltar and other countries amending their own legislation to allow for the medicinal or therapeutic use of cannabis.

Although locally there is a growing lobby of groups and individuals who are pushing for a much more lenient and softer approach to general drugs use.

I would like to think that where legislation is concerned drug laws would remain as they are, particularly where the recreational use of cannabis is concern. The reason for this is quite simple when in a general sense, medically and scientifically, there is a lack of understanding regarding the full extent of the dangers involved with cannabis consumption, especially in a long-term recreational environment.

But what we do know and this includes from a Gibraltar perspective, is that a good number of addicts and serious problem users, first start using cannabis as their drug of choice, before then moving on to an array of other more dangerous variety of substances with devastating results!
