Domestic abuse in Gibraltar continues on an uptrend

PANORAMA INVESTIGATION
Domestic abuse is an important issue in Gibraltar. Domestic abuse on the Rock saw a 26% increase in 2020, with 614 reports made to the Royal Gibraltar Police; up from 489 cases in 2019.

Due to COVID-19, lockdowns meant that more people were spending their days at home, and if they were in an abusive relationship, it resulted in them being more exposed to the different types of abuse that come with it.
The Crown Prosecution Service define domestic abuse as: “Domestic abuse, or domestic violence, is defined across Government as any incident of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of their gender or sexuality.”
