The history of GIBRALTAR’S BUILDINGS

by RYAN ASQUEZ
The Irish Town Police Station is among the most iconic buildings in Irish Town. This Victorian gothic red brick structure stands out as an aesthetically pleasing building, but it is also one which has played a key and prominent role in the modern history of Gibraltar.

The police station was built in 1864 and designed by Walter Eliot in a style reminiscent to that of the Convent’s facade. It was officially inaugurated on 7 July that year by the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir William Codrington. A plaque on the facade of the building records this event, and reads: ‘POLICE OFFICE ERECTED 1864 GENERAL SIR WILLIAM JOHN CODRINGTON K.C.B. GOVERNOR’.
