PANORAMA CAMPAIGN

by JOE GARCIA

Just over a year ago, the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said that the Government's view was supportive of the PANORAMA CAMPAIGN for a statue of Winston Churchill to be erected in Winston Churchill Avenue.
In recognising the PANORAMA CAMPAIGN he added: "Winston Churchill has long had an avenue in Gibraltar but that is NOT enough in the Government's view.
"The legacy of Churchill should be recognised more visibly in Gibraltar and a statue, as PANORAMA is campaigning for, would be one of a number of fitting ways to make that recognition explicit."

Mr Picardo went on to confirm that a statue is the Government's choice.
"The Government will look at how we can provide that statue to the memory of the man who had the passion and optimism to keep alive the dream of freedom for all of Europe and who defended Gibraltar remaining British in that cause and forever," he said.
We have always been grateful for our long-held campaign to have been recognised by the Government , but the time is overdue to do something about it. The Government should now activate a 'Statue for Churchill' project, as the concrete realisation of such a scheme will require time to put together. Someone should put his or her thinking cap on to work out the details, possibly even asking any member of the public with ideas to submit them for consideration.
With the Cross of Sacrifice war memorial situated where it is, nothing would be more appropriate than to replace the sundial on the roundabout opposite it, with a facing war memorial with the Churchill statue as the centre-piece. The sundial could be placed in a more suitable location elsewhere allowing for public access and it becoming an amenity.
