Languages and their many facets

by CARMEN GOMEZ

Artificial language is a language that has been created for a particular purpose, rather than one that has developed naturally as a way for people to communicate.

This brings to mind something which, as a girl, my mother and a group of her friends invented a way of communicating with each other, so that others could not understand what they were saying. I tried to do it and had great fun with it. All one had to do was put the letter `t` before every word said in Spanish and do it rapidly. Esperanto is perhaps the best known of all artificial languages. It was devised in 1887 as an international medium of communication; though no country has adopted it officially.
