Self-identification will strengthen self-determination

Self-identification will strengthen self-determination

In my View by MARK VIALES

Forget about self-determination. Without telling the Llanito story from a local perspective, Gibraltar will always be viewed as a colony outside its six square kilometres. The building blocks have evolved during 300 years of British rule, but only two opinions spearhead the international narrative.

The Rock is either a Spanish territory or a money-laundering British tax haven symbolising the lasting remnants of colonialism, neither of which comes as a compliment.
Little is known of the Gibraltarian formulation as a people following the evacuation, notwithstanding the years of battle against Spanish oppression from Franco and others who followed.
