Unite, the union for workers in Gibraltar, have welcomed the measures announced in the Chief Minister’s 2023 budget speech to address the cost of living crisis, but have stated that in relation to public sector pay, members will decide whether these measures go far enough in a public sector wide ballot. The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, who is the Minister for Finance, will present the budget for 2023-2024 to the Gibraltar Parliament this morning. It will signal the start of a State of the Nation debate during which the Government is expected to set out how good things are and the Opposition the mirror opposite. Read more

The Vijay Daryanani welcomed the Marella Voyager ship on its inaugural visit to Gibraltar on Monday.
The Marella Voyager is the newest ship of the Marella Cruise fleet and can carry up to 2,000 passengers with additional crew members. Read more

On Saturday, July 8th the annual Calentita festival took place, with food stalls in Piazza, the Boulevard and Campion Park. The event was well attended, with queues for all stalls throughout the course of the night. Read more

When Gibraltar last week marked both General Sikorsky’s death and American Independence at different locations, the Scottish island of Orkney at the same time voted to reconsider its constitutional status. In so doing, there is a plan to compare the island with the Crown Dependencies, like Jersey, and the Overseas Territories, like Gibraltar. The Rock is soon set to embark on a review of its own as well. Read more

An application to create a temporary land reclamation within the line of the coastal protection works for the proposed Eastside project has recently been filed with the Town Planning department.
On the Town Planning portal as part of eGov, the application states it is for “advanced works to create a temporary land reclamation within the line of the coastal protection works forming part of the O/18038/22 supplemental outline planning permission NO 8365A dated 28 March 2023.” Read more

The airport is a political hot potato and Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares is wrong to have put it on the agenda of the treaty negotiations. This was not conclusively resolved during our time in the European Union and it is even less likely to be resolved now. Read more
