Brexit this week has twisted British politics from the respected, sound and upright governmental law-making model, once the envy of global democracies for centuries, into the chaotic, incompetent and deceitful political play that has cast aside the ‘Interest of the British Public, including ours here in Gibraltar’. Recognizing that we are at the mercy of Spain if the UK leaves, the question poised to Lord Callanan in the House of Lords recently was, “What are we doing for Gibraltar?” His reply, “I have not heard any detail about that.” Not very reassuring to say the least! Then he went on to say that if the issues put to him, were of such importance to the Government (UK) then surely it; i.e. the UK government; should have been up front and clear, as to precisely what they were offering, and should have considered whether compensation, or something else of that kind might be required. As many as eight charities yesterday received cheques of £1500 each from the proceeds of The Convent Open Day 2017-18.

On Wednesday, in a joint initiative by the GHA and MOD, Health Promotion held its annual No Smoking Day campaign stand, outside the ICC. At the stall, a variety of leaflets and pamphlets were made available to the public and ranged from how to stop smoking to the dangers of smoking. Large 3D posters also demonstrated the consequences of smoking and the consequences of second-hand smoke with pictures and diagrams depicting effects on eyes, asthma, babies and cancer. Read more

Enthusiastic Year 6 students from Bishop Fitzgerald School spent their Wednesday outside of the classroom, studying Recycling. They enjoyed a fantastic visit to Gibraltar’s Civic Amenities, where staff members from the Department of the Environment were keen to spend the hot and sunny afternoon showing the children around and explaining the various processes included in each relevant section within the site. The next lecture in the museum series will be given by Professor Clive Finlayson on Thursday 14th March at 7pm at the John Mackintosh Hall. Professor Finlayson’s talk is entitled “The Smart Neanderthal” which is the title of his latest book just published by Oxford University Press.
