Church bells to mark the anniversary of VE day

May 08, 2015

To mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the bells of Gibraltar's churches will be rung for 10 minutes at 12 noon on Saturday 9 May. This will coincide with churches throughout UK many of which will be ringing their bells at 11am, UK time.

The significance of this act is that, throughout World War II, all church bells in UK were silenced, to be rung only as a warning of an invasion by enemy troops. On VE Day in 1945, many churches rang their bells as a way of marking the end of the war in Europe.

Daft island description of Gibraltar and the FCO draft

May 08, 2015

With a Foreign Office recruitment advert describing Gibraltar as an island, the FCO has now explained how the incorrect information appeared in their advert.

An FCO spokesperson said:

o The recruitment agency used by the FCO for external recruitment incorrectly uploaded on Friday 1 May an earlier draft of the job advert which they had prepared for the FCO.

o The agency had been told to change a number of passages which contained inaccuracies and were provided with a corrected text. But they uploaded their original version in error. This was removed and replaced as soon as we informed them of this error on Tuesday 5 May. They have written to apologise for this and any offence that was caused.

If a General Election took place tomorrow, who would you vote for?

May 08, 2015

The GSLP/Liberals would win an election by a clear lead of 65%, according to a PANORAMA Opinion Poll, with the GSD trailing behind with 35%.

This would represent a substantial increase in support for the GSLP/Liberal Alliance compared with the 49% obtained at the last general election.

The slump in the GSD vote puts them 30% behind the GSLP/Liberals, which would provide them with quite an uphill task to overtake their political rivals.

The GSD are clearly making little impact outside their core support, with the need for an urgent re-think of their current political strategy glaringly obvious.

The GSLP/Liberals, on the other hand, are evidently seen as an alliance that has been delivering their commitments, with major positive changes in what is a relatively short period of time - even if their have been some hiccups along the way.

The poll sample was 725, covering all the electoral districts of Gibraltar. The confidence level is about 3%. The number of blanks did not exceed 6%.

PANORAMA polls are now in their 40th year, having been pioneered by Panorama shortly after it was founded. It has built up a reputation throughout the years, having predicted the downfall of the AACR who had been in power for some 40 years; that the GSLP would obtain all seats in the opposition and their subsequent victory into government for the first time as well as when they were ousted from power by the GSD. In recent years the two main parties have been neck and neck, but today's poll would seem to indicate that the GSLP Liberal alliance have moved to a commanding position.

Our polls have always followed he same scientific methods that have produced accurate results of events and trends in Gibraltar.

We are grateful to all those who take part in them. Our polls are absolutely confidential and respondents remain anonymous.
