It has been a poor New Year honours awards for Gibraltar. In fact, only one award could truly be regarded as a Queen's honour award.

Mark Twain once said that “There was but one solitary thing about the past worth remembering and that was the fact that it is past and can’t be restored.” This is something we would like Spanish citizens, but more so its politicians, to think about for a while, digest, and then come to the conclusion, that in the same way that they can’t change many things about their country because they are part of their culture; likewise, they can’t possibly change our ways, because that too is part of our culture. It was in 2011, that the then Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister said that Spain could not stop the arrival of submarines in Gibraltar, but that Britain as a partner and ally, could adopt a more constructive and cooperative attitude. Spain, a country that has never worried at paralyzing the community to protect her position over Gibraltar on air liberalization; external frontiers control etc; argued what right we had to export bilateral problems to a multilateral organization such as NATO, where decisions had to be taken unanimously; this after they themselves had brought the proceedings on maritime and air routes to and from Gibraltar. At the start of the five-day withdrawal debate proper, Theresa May in her opening intervention again made reference to Gibraltar referring to the EU Summit, she said, “right at the end, when Spain tried to make a move on Gibraltar, I stood firm and protected Gibraltar’s sovereignty. That is why the Chief Minister of Gibraltar has said that no friend of Gibraltar should vote this deal down”. Read more

With all the political drama that has being going on recently, and no one really knowing what is happening, it was a bit like the Ockey cokey last weekend, In, out, In, Out, shake it all about. I gave up following it all, and thought to myself, "Enough" and switched off by refusing to speculate or believe one side or the other. At one point it appeared that both sides disagreed and were going to sign an agreement to contradict their statements. The world has gone mad. Read more

I will only add, that Brexit Withdrawal Protocols aside. The Government should seriously re-consider other parts of the agreement with Spain made public regarding the memorandum of understandings (MoU’s) or the 5 or 6 so-called practical issues mentioned last week! Read more
