Years ago, I remarked to a Gibraltarian, ‘Spain lays claim to Gibraltar, Argentina the Falkland Islands, Guatemala Belize, what is it with Spanish-speaking countries?’ to which he replied, ‘I think you mean: “What is it with fascists?”’ I wouldn’t brand them as ‘fascists’, but rather as ‘Hispano-irredentists’, all hankering after long lost territory, if it were theirs to lose. Let’s stop kidding ourselves and face the reality of today‘s society. The claim that foreigners from across the way are taking away jobs from the locals has to be a myth. We are all aware that one of the EU rules was that workers from member states had to be employed locally; whilst I believe the general consensus was that that the jobs should first be offered to locals. Now that we are leaving Europe perhaps we won’t have to adhere to their rules any longer, but nevertheless and despite this, nothing will change much on the work front. Read more

The Government is informing the public of the effect of a No-Deal Brexit on healthcare services provided to (1) EU nationals resident or working in Gibraltar; (2) Gibraltarian citizens resident or working in the EU or the UK; (3) and Gibraltarians receiving treatment in Spain, other EU Member States or the UK. The Gibraltar National Museum is developing a new collaboration in the research at Gorham’s and Vanguard Caves. This new link involves the Archaeozoology Unit of the Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. The annual excavations at Gorham’s and Vanguard Caves are being extended to cover a period of three months (previously two months) and will commence early in May this year. Read more

The Gibraltar Rhythmic Gymnasts competed in La Linea in their groups competition, with more clubs coming from further afield to make this a very competitive and high standard competition.
GB squad Espoir Group did not compete but opened the competition with their routine as practice for this weekend’s qualification. Read more

Last Saturday was an incredibly sunny and fun-filled day for all, as a “Leprechaun Family Fun Day” was held at Ocean Village in aid of GibSams Charity. GibSams are the Gibraltar Samaritans who work within the local community to aid people who are distressed and in need of emotional support by providing an anonymous helpline for people to talk without prejudice. The GSD says it continues to be approached by local fishermen who are angry at the levels of illegal Spanish fishing that is taking place in our waters and at the double standards of the authorities who are policing the permit scheme. Read more

The United Kingdom Government and the Government of Gibraltar have sought further clarification from the Government of the Kingdom of Spain in respect of the continued use of existing driving licences by UK and Gibraltar motorists.
This follows a degree of ambiguity in the substance and the recitals of the Spanish Royal Decree that was published earlier this month. Read more
