50th anniversary of Special Olympics

The 50th anniversary of Special Olympics was celebrated in Gibraltar with a gala dinner enjoyed by all. 

The Special Olympics organisation was founded in the USA in 1958 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of the late President John F Kennedy, when athletes with intellectual disabilities participated in a number of sports competitions. Gibraltar joind in 1985, and the following year, international status in its own right was recognised.

"Our mission in Gibraltar is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type sports for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
