Does the EU’s draft mandate surprise us?

Foreign Affairs Minister Dastis in his day maintained that Madrid did not have any intention of making life difficult for people; meaning us. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!


Does the EU`s draft mandate surprise us? Not at all! Were we expecting it? Perhaps we were. Did we trust them? Not really, not after the disdain with which they had treated us whenever Spain was in the picture; but that does not rule out the hope that; as Dominic Raab put it; with hard work and good will; the framework could be turned into a legally- binding treaty. He was reasonably confident of this, as according to him, at a press conference at Convent Place, he let it be known that most of the stumbling blocks for a UK-EU future relationship treaty over Gibraltar had already been dealt with and overcome, during the talks late last year which resulted in the New Year’s Eve in-principle agreement.
