Why is it Team GB and not Team UK in the Olympics?

Why is it Team GB and not Team UK in the Olympics? There has been much debate around the team name. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are in full swing and Team GB looks to be off to a promising start.


But as the UK includes Northern Ireland as well as Great Britain, many are keen to know why the team is known as Team GB and not Team UK.
