CORNWALL
Ralph was later sent to Bodmin in Cornwall. Six months later his wife arrived.
He was attached to the Cornwall Light Infantry. One day, he was in the workshop and overheard a conversation between an official and the Sergeant Major. The official would practice scrambling with his motorbike, and the footrest had broken. He asked the Sergeant Major whether it could be fixed, who replied that it could not.
After the official had left, Ralph said, ‘I’ve heard the conversation’.
‘Why did I tell him that I’d heard the conversation?’, he laughed. The Sergeant Major looked like he was going to shoot him! Ralph explained that he could fix the bike, and the Sergeant Major returned with the official, Major Peter Hogan.
