The Drama festival draws its curtain for another year

by CARMEN GOMEZ
Apparently, in the year 1888, in May, there was an entry in the Gibraltar Chronicle which read, that the editor had refused to include theatre crits beyond record the fact of performance; and I quote; “Subsequent holders of the chair can bear eloquent testimony to the storm of obloquy (strong public condemnation) which breaks round their heads where every member of the cast is not referred to in terms of praise suitable for a Sarah Bernhardt or a Caruso.

I found this highly amusing, because a few years back, someone who used to do the crits for a local paper, found herself being harassed in the street by some actor or director whose play had been in the Drama Festival; a play which they had thought was above reproach and therefore were much put out at the comments made.
