Gibraltar’s business community will no doubt be relieved to hear from Sir Joe Bossano that VAT would not be introduced and that joining the Customs Union per se was not on the cards.
However the suggestion of import duties that might mirror EU VAT does raise the question as to increased costs for the consumer and decrease in competitiveness. Read more

On 8 June 1969, General Francisco Franco, Caudillo of Spain, shut his country’s land border with Gibraltar. Just under 2 years earlier, Gibraltarians had overwhelmingly voted to remain British. The dictator’s hope was to strangle Gibraltar into submission. He failed, but it was not until 1985 that the frontier would be fully reopened as a condition of Spain’s accession to the European Economic Community. Read more

The Mental Health Crisis Pathway via 111 was introduced by the GHA on 26th July 2021. It allows patients and their relatives a single point of contact for a Mental Health Crisis, which can be safely triaged, managed and followed-up by clinical professionals. This 24/7 telephone backup provides reassurance to patients and families and increases the availability of specialist Mental Health staff to assess and support people in the community. Read more

A delegation from the European Union will visit Gibraltar this week in connection with the talks being held over the EU Treaty. The visit will be of a technical nature, so that those concerned can inspect installations here and on the Spanish side of the frontier. The delegation will also visit the Gibraltar airport and the port, which are issues which arise in the said talks. Read more

In the year 2000, Tessa Sacramento-Menez won the Miss Gibraltar pageant, which meant she was then able to travel to both London and the Maldives to participate in events for Miss World.
Almost 22 years on from the event, Tessa now works for the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, is married and blessed with two children. Read more
