An incipient row involving Spain, Britain and Morocco is emerging over conflicting plans for a tunnel across the Strait of Gibraltar. The British plan is to connect Morocco with Gibraltar, while the Spaniards have a separate plan to link Morocco with Spain. Read more

Part 1: Birds
The Strait of Gibraltar is the point at which Africa and Europe are at their closest and has always been a key crossing point for migratory species. Every year, millions of birds and insects brave the 14-kilometre sea crossing, making use of uplifts and thermals to make the journey. Huge numbers of sea-dwelling animals, particularly Bluefin tuna, also traverse the Strait from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mediterranean Sea, using strong currents to their advantage. Read more

On today’s series of Past and Present we take a look at the history and present state of Chatham Counter-guard. The fortifications in the area date back all the way late 1700’s and the early 1800’s. The function of a counterguard was to provide as an outwork in a bastioned fortification, comprising a moderately low rampart, based in front of the existing bastion behind it. Read more
